Re: [ST] Flat Battery

Rick

The automobile charging system cannot damage a motorcycle'e electrics by virtue of having a larger current capacity. Because both systems are designed to run on a nominal 12volts they are compatible in almost every sense. The extra current capacity of the car system is due to larger demand from a myriad of electric devices from heated screens, seats, door mirrors, motorised seats, DVD players etc.

If you removed the battery from any 12v bike, you could run the bike all day off the car battery if you cared to ride alongside it with the jump leads attached. You could probably get away with the converse setup if the car was a prompt starter.

Not smart to try it though!

Chris,

You are correct that I errored in confusing cold cranking amps with amperage in an automotive battery.

The point remains that an automotive charging system is capable of producing many more amps than a motorcycle electrical system can handle. The result is damaged components, typically the regulator rectifier is the first to fail.
