Re: [St] Speaking of tires NOW Winterizing my ST

While I don't "winterize" the ST (I get out at least a couple of times a mon=
th here in Seattle), my father does winterize his boat. He changes the oil a=
nd filter at the end of the boating season using fresh synthetic. He drains=
the portable fuel tanks into the "Farm Truck" (a 302 powered '71 Ford half=
ton) and stores them "dry". He does "fog" a winterizing oil into the air in=
takes with the engine running. He repacks the trailer bearings and blocks th=
e tires (deflated to15 psi or so) off the ground. The battery spends the win=
ter in the garage on a "tender". He lives in the eastern part of the state w=
here temps will get well below freezing and stay that way for days at a stre=
tch. He's used this procedure for years on every boat he's owned, and always=
just fills the tires, fuels up, and hits the river as soon as things thaw i=
n the spring.
I can't imagine that doing the same for a bike would hurt anything, and I'd=
probably do a similar routine if I needed to store the mine.

OK, I will then!

I just winterized motorcycle # 1 (GTS) by changing the oil and filter, pulli=
ng the battery and getting both tires off the floor once I parked it in the=
 back corner of the garage.

While I will ride the ST for another month or more here in Canada, depending=
upon the wx, I am curious what you other "value-minded" listers do with res=
pect to that expensive synthetic oil? Normally, I change the oil again afte=
r one or two short warm-up runs in the spring time. And yes, I appreciate t=
hat oil changes are less expensive that engine rebuilds, however I was wonde=
ring what others do since this will be the first "over-winter" for me and my=
ST. For example, does anyone run synthetic oil during m/c season, then put=
a "regular" oil in the cases just for winter storage, then return to synthe=
tic the following spring?

Also, does the gel battery require any different storage maintenace from a r=
egular lead-acid version?
My normal drill is to store my m/c battery in my basement workshop and put i=
t on a trickle charger once a month for 48 hrs.
