Re: [St] Your fueling yourself (and road trip report..long)

My '06 does the same thing. Isn't the FJR tank under the seat? Might be
a more "regular" shape.
While on the subject of the "distance to empty" (miles here in the
States) reading; I have found a use for it: it provides cheap
entertainment while droning across the vast expanses of wheat fields
here in the Northwest while transiting from one interesting bit of road
to the next.

I just did a ten day 1700 mile loop of the region one up with NO BAGS!
Epic fun, and my lovely wife followed dutifully along in the "Toy
transportation system" (a.k.a. the Dodge Dakota pick-up truck) loaded
down with a rowing shell, two bicycles, a lap top computer, GPS, and ALL
of my riding gear (why not? There's plenty of room!). No schedule, just
pick a day's destination and go. We spent three days in McCall, ID at
her uncle's place but other than that we just went two to three hundred
miles per leg and spent lots of time exploring our little corner of the
planet.

PERFECT ROAD ALERT!!!!!
I'm sure most of the Northwest liSTers know about it, but if you ever
have the opportunity to ride highway 12 from Lewiston Idaho to Missoula
Montana in early September, DO IT!! Either direction, both directions,
don't matter, just do it.
WOW! I've done it in a cage during the summer a couple of times and it's
a long boring slog because there aren't many passing zones, and there
are recreational vehicles of every description by the thousand. I did it
late in the first week of September and saw maybe twenty five
motorcycles of various descriptions, a few cages, and about four RVs,
three of which were going the other way. Really a memorable ride. The
first indication of the fun to come is the squiggle arrow on the yellow
diamond sign with "next 77 miles" below it.

Mileage report: two consecutive 275 mile (GPS verified) tanks of fuel
during the trip. Riding speed limit plus five to eight mph so as not to
loose the chase vehicle I got 55 mpg for ten gallons of fuel. Personal
best! Screwed up somewhere along the way and reset trip meter #1 so I
don't have a trip average, but it was definitely in the upper 40s.

Dave,

Heck, my (still sorta new) '06 (...can't believe Ginny has already
picked up her '08 ST already this week!!!) does exactly the same thing!

Steve Crate's link to the fuel tank diagram does however gives a good
explanation why most motorcycles with a fuel guage are so inaccuarte.
Footnote: my buddy's 05 FJR has a VERY accurate fuel guage.

As a segue, the addition (this is an assumption since I have never
ridden an "older" ST (pre-'05)) of the LCD display tells me (on one of
the several screens) how many Kms I have left to "empty." So when the
incredibly annoying bright RED fuel warning light comes on, the screen
usually tells me I have ~100 kms to go; or about one-third the total
distance on a tank of gas ... another not-so-desirable trait of this
bike, IMHO. But it adds to the character of the bike I think I heard
someone say... :-)

Cheers,

Brian

PS For any listers on the East Coast, I will be in Hoosick, NY having a
long lunch at the Man of Kent pub with a few other riding friends on Sat
29 Sep (yep, tomorrow). Feel free to drop in and exchange war stories.
Look for the ON (Ontario, Canada) licence plate attached to the
bug-covered Caspian Blue ST.

PPS (for anyone still reading!) - would one of you (Euro) listers be
kind enough to enlighten me as to what "Alice" is?
In the MotoGP world, I often see "Alice" advertising banners and logos.
This is not a brand sold in Canada so I am curious!
