[St] 2000 sprint ST wont start.

My bike:

2000 Sprint ST 955

 

I hear the fule pump turn on, when hitting the ignitation switch the starter
begins to turn over. Before the engine makes it first revolution I hear a
clank, and the starter motor just spins. 

 

It seems to me that when the starter motor gets pressure on it somthing get
thrown out causeing the starter motor to just spin while not engaging the
engine.

 

I pulled the starter motor out hoping to find a missing gear on the end or a
broken shaft. Hand turning the motor seems to be correct with a bit of
resistance on it. And directly connected to a battery it functions as
antisipated.

 

My question is is there some sort of throw out gearing somwhere so that when
the engine DOES start the thow out gearing causes the starter to disengage?
If so I think that may be where my problem lies.

 

I do not have a service manual for the bike.
