Wheel bearings check good.  They're solid with no play, front or rear.

The more I think about it, the way it feels leads me to agree with the chain
idea.  I think it's time to replace it anyway.

Just as a sidenote, has anyone used one of those fork stabilizers advertised
on Triumphrat.net?
