i'm not a resin expert, but i think that's where the 'aging' happens.
the glass/carbon fiber is good for an eon or so, but the
resins/polycarbonates/Fleers in the matrix lose tensile and become
brittle with age. the process is accelerated with explosure to
physical shock and volatiles - brake fluid for some, ether for others,
etc.

the crushable liner has its own separate aging process.

it's not that the helmet dissolves at some expiration date, but it
slowly loses mechanical strength and crush until it does not meet
spec. will it still protect you? yes. do you want to be wearing it
when you high side to the pavement and then bounce off a curb?
probably not.
