That's why I made reference to the string type plug.  Never used the
mushroom type, but understand they work well.

String type are available at most auto parts stores, K Mart, Wal Mart, gas
stations  and other Marts, so are easy to come by in an emergency and I've
had good luck with them on the bike, cages and lawn mowers..
