I am getting roughly 43mpg commuting, back road racing, etc. That is what I got before the tune-up, which leads me to my next question. After the valve adjustment service, the only improvement I noticed was that the engine may run a little smoother. I only had the service done because my bike was at the 12k mile mark (I know, go ahead and laugh. But I have only had the bike since August '07) and that is what Triumph recommends. The non-Triumph mechanics I know tell me that the valve adjustments are more important when the bike is newer because you want the valves to seat properly. In my case, I just did not feel I got $400 worth of benefit from the service. Is it good practice get valve adjustments every 12k? If not, what signs let you know your bike is ready for a valve adjustment?

Derek,
I took my ST in every approximately 12K miles. According to the dealer
the valves never needed adjusting. I always asked him to write down
the clearances for me. One cool morning at the end of July at around
48K the bike required some throttle to start and would not idle until
it warmed up. This behavior continued. The valves had last been
checked at 40K. After looking into some other possibilities and
talking to some friends I became sure the problem was tight exhaust
valve clearances. The friend I had sold the bike to had them checked
and indeed that was the problem and after they were adjusted the bike
started and idled fine. When the exhaust clearances were checked at
40K 5 of them were at 7 and one was at 8 (spec is 6-8). So either the
clearances started changing more rapidly or the dealer did not
actually check them at 40K.
