That's why I was asking. If the car wasn't running it's just another  
12v battery with more cranking potential than his dead bike battery.

Assuming you make the connections in the proper order, it's totally  
safe to jump from a car. Just don't have the car running.

Think about it, if a car battery can't start a bike, then it probably  
needs a jump of it's own.
