No offense, but how could the rectifiers be shot because of that. That would mean that max reverse voltage would be so low
and the car voltage (running) so hight! They are supposed to be the same range.

The only adverse effect I see is transient too, at the time of connecting/disconnecting. Some car manufacturers recommend
not to jump start for this reason. I do it however. 
Connecting the ground first should lower the risk. Connecting first through a 20 Ohms resistance (or like) then strapping 
it should get the risk to close to zero. Reverse for disconnecting. 

In fact when you connect there's often sparks due to voltage diff. Sometime the flash memory or the ecu dislike that. But compare
to a PC it's suppose to be hardened techno.
