Re: [St] Alternator problems.

I found an excellent NEW replacement stator for my 02 St at WWW.ricksmotorsportselectrics.com.
I've had it on for 4 months and it works excellent.
Another tip is to use an regulator rectifier from a Ducati 749,999,1000DS they bolt right in. I put it on when I put the stator on. This data should be ok for all ST/RS 2002>2004 and maybe the 2005 on.(I haven't tried the 05>)
yoy have to swap the connector on the ducat reg. with the one on your triumph unit. (push the pins out of the connector and swap the connector.(the pinout is the same but the connector housing.) also check for clearance around the heatsink and the cable bundle.

All,

Here is the follow up for now:

One of the three stator coil is fried. That explain why the coils are
now connected
to the ground. It is a triangle arrangement by the way. The insulation
has melted on
one core of this coil. I have two options: rewire or buy a new one.

I now have to double check the regulator/rectifier. I will simulate the
stator w/ a transformer
w/ a big condenser + power resistor as the load. A bulb could also be ok.
Now I have to figure out how a bad rectifier could have fried one coil.
In fact as
only one coil is out, I can only suspect one or two diodes of the
rectifier. I can't imagine the price
of stator+regulator/rectifier. My bike was bought new in August 2002
that is 5 years and half.
Re-wirering is probably the best option but painful. Plus the core
insulator is melted. Epoxy
+ thin glass fiber (50 gr/m2) can probably fix that.

The bike will stay a long time in the garage I think.

Fred

I would say the same as for normal plugs. Iridium is used for long lasting.

Fred

I recently bought a set of NGK iridium plugs to put in my 00 Sprint,
but could
not find any specs as to what the gap should be. Do I even need to gap
these
plugs or should they be ready to go out of the box?

I would be checking and even shopping around for a price on those bits new.

As is the case with most things in this throw away sociaety, are they even
repairable?

Hi all,
For anyone who is interested, we have just had the first practice session of
the world famous NW 200 ( WWW.northwest200.org ) It was a great evening with
very few incidents and everyone got past my station at Mathers cross fast and
safe. So I had nothing to do but stand back and enjoy the action. There are a
few trumpers entered in the 600cc Supersport race but unfortunately they didn't
do too well against the Japs and so far none of them have qualified for the
race.

For the 'stat. heads' the lap record in this class for the 8.999 mile
(English standard not Irish Country) course is 118.407mph held by Kiwi Bruce
Ansty. Last night the fastest qualifing lap was Keith Amour on a Honda lap time
4:3811 lap speed 116.097mph. While the fastest Triumph 675 was Tim Poole 4:5840
or 108.167mph The next qualifing session is Thursday 15th, roads close at 5.00pm
GMT. and it is possible to watch the action live on line at www.bbc.co.uk/nw200

In case you haven't heard of this race, the NW200 is real balls to the wall
road racing, between the hedges and the walls on real roads. Official speeds of
over 200mph have been clocked (Michael Rutter) It's just like the Isle of Mann
TT except here it's a grid start and instead of racing the clock, these guys
race each other nose to tail and side by side.

Fred, Sorry to hear that. If I got the year right http://www.bikebandit.com has the following prices Stator $428 R/R $306

I wonder what they cost in France. If it was me I would keep an eye on
EBAY and call a few wreckers.

It is a shame Dan is parting out a 99!

Good luck
Rupert

Fred, any dc motor shop can probably rewind your stator in a pinch. On the regulator issue I would not touch it, just replace it. And here is why, all the diodes have been stressed and abused at this point. Just because only one has failed does not mean that the others are not going to cascade fail in another week or so. Just replace the R&R and either get a new stator or get it rewound by someone that knows DC motors.

Looks like I can answer part of my own question thanks to the K&N site: http://www.knfilters.com/air_filter/Triumph_Sprint_ST_RS_900.aspx

Would still like to have the Triumph partnos for future reference if anyone
knows...

This is a little update about my alternator problem in case someone
interested.
I checked yesterday night the regulator rectifier following the procedure:

http://www.thegsresources.com/garage/gs_statorfault.htm

It seems ok. I am surprised about the fact that all diodes can be
checked this way.
Between 0.6 and 0.7 Volts each.

I disconnected the stators coils from each other but didn't unwire them
yet. One is shorted
to the core and the varnish is partially gone. The wire diameter is 1 mm
(copper only).
I may try to rewire w/ 1.2mm but I wonder if it's such a good idea.

I don't understand why only one coil was shot. But that explains why w/
only one headlamp
bulb I was able to get back. 2/3 of the power or less.

I inquired about the stator and regulator prices:
stator: 443 euros
RR: 338 euros

outch! No wonder the rewiring is the way to go.

This link describes exactly what I will do:
