Re: [St] wax or...

<In theory all you need to do with an O- or X-ring chain is keep water
off it, as lube is already sealed inside the rings.>

Partly. As our old friends at Renold show:
http://www.renold.com/Support/ChainInformationCentre/Chain_Fundamental
s.asp

Where there is a sealed chain, it is between the pin and the bushing.
Dirt out, lube in, all nice. But there is no seal between the bushing
and the roller outside it.

The bulk of the load is where the pin goes through the sideplate, but
there is a gap between the bushing and roller that can get water. Once
it has water and maybe dirt, we get corrosion; loss of roller wall
makes a slight change in center distance, increasing the load on the
last link on the sprocket, and on the last tooth in contact. Like
bolts, where the bulk of the load is carried by the first two or three
threads, so it is with chains, where the load is carried mostly on the
first few links in contact.

If a chain is wet, a WD-40 type water displacing treatment is good to
get the water out from under the roller. If there's a tiny film of wax
or oil in there, less water gets in and less corrosion occurs.
