Gearshift Shaft

    I did much the same thing, but the connecting rod on my bike
looks, feels and produces the blackened fingers which I associate with 
raw aluminium [aluminum ;-)].

    Someone else mentioned ajusting the rear brake pedal; I've had a
brief look at this and there didn't appear to be much adjustment
available.  I'll have another look when I get a moment.
