Stiff 1st shift (was: Re: st-digest V1999 #50)

I've had this too (7600km/4700mi), only on the first few shifts of a
morning, but I find that it can be avoided by short shifting up when it's
cold. That is to say, the change is only stiff if the rewvs have gone to
about 4000 or more in first.

If at the start of the day you only use first at low revs then you have no
problem.
