The 'T' designators refer to the 'generation' or series of the bike
and the bike's displacement. A T509 is a fifth generation Triumph with
a '900cc' (actually 885cc) engine, while a T595 has a 955cc engine.

T3-series Triumphs are the older modular bikes and currently include
all of the non-fuel injected models like the Trophy, the T-birds, the
Adventurer, the Ledgends and the Tiger. The T3s all share a common
frame and one of two engines [1] - either an 885cc three cylender
(almost all models) or an 1180cc four (the Trophy 1200).

The T5 series bikes represent the first departure for the new Triumph
from the modular concept. They have different frames, somewhat
different engines, and (I beleve) are all fuel injected. The Daytona,
and Speed Triple are the two T5 series models.

The Sprint ST is another departure for Triumph and is actually a
sixth-generation machine. Since it has a 955cc motor, it's designator
is T695. However, the engine in the Sprint is nearly identical to the
engine the current T5 series use, so lots of folks on this list and
the T5 list refer to it as a T5 motor.

==== Triumph FAQ ====
Question: I own two of your Hinckley built machines, and have loved
every mile on them. My '95 Daytona 1200 and '97 T595 are both terrific
designs. I do have a few questions, however: What is the T3XX number
for the Daytona 1200. T312 would be logical, but the Trophy 4 could
also have that designation ?.

Answer: Listed below are our internal designations which are assigned
to bikes during their design and developement: T375 R Trident 750 /
T309 R Trident 900 / T309 RS Sprint 900 / T309 RF Sprint Sport / T309
RG Sprint Executive / T309 RP Speed Triple 900 / T309 SP Daytona 900
/T309 SR Super III / T309 ST Trophy 900 / T309 RT Thunderbird / T309
RC Adventurer / T309 SN Adventurer (99) / T309 RD Thunderbird Sport /
T309 RL Legend / T409 EN Tiger /T709 EN Tiger (99)/ T509 RP T509 Speed
Triple / T595 RP Speed Triple (99)/ T595 SP Daytona / T695 ST Sprint
ST / T312 ST Trophy 1200 / T312 SP Daytona 1200.

[1] Well, one of three engines. Two of them are 885cc triples, but one
is black and one is silver.
