Only if the terrain is level and the road is straight. Here in the DC
area the Maryland State Troopers like to hide on the far side of an
overpass. There are several places on the major highways up there where
the road dips beneath the overpass, and the trooper can park his vehicle
so that the overpass obscures his position until you're within easy
lidar range.

There's generally one officer shooting lidar and 3-5 officers writing
tickets -- quite the fleecing! Also, police departments like the lidar
guns becase 1) Geico and the IIHS frequently give them to the agencies,
and 2) revenue per lidar gun is two to four times the revenue for
traditional radar guns.

There are some commercial paints, but they don't work terribly well and
look even worse. The military has some fairly effective coatings, but
they're not available to the public. :-) Besides, lidar operators are
trained to aim for the front license plate or the headlamp reflector, so
they're only hitting your paint if they're a terrible shot.
