Azaros and other tires

Avon had a problem with some early Azaros coming apart as you describe.
I beleive that most of them were replaced under a warranty scenario.

I've successfully mixed tires. One of my favorite combos is a Metzeler MEZ1R

front and Michelin Macadam rear. Great stick on the front, good mileage on 
the rear with little tendency to flat spot. Ridden hard on a bike with
similar
weight, (ZX9R) I would get around 4K on the back and a bit more on the
front. 
Handling was predictable to the hero blobs, and my bike had more ground
clearance than stock (Penske shock and RaceTech front end).
