Gas tank vacuum

When I open the filler cap, there is a very loud sucking sound, as air rushes
into the tank. The less fuel there is in the tank, the stronger the vacuum
becomes-it is not evident when the tank is full. The first time this happened
was when I took delivery of the new bike, and Mark at Rocket Motorcycles in
San Diego looked for evidence of kinked vent hoses, and found none, Strangly
enough, I experience no symptoms of fuel starvation, even though the vacuum
is strong enough to require cionsiderable effort to open the filler cap. Is
this common? Should I worry? Dave Collins, San Diego. PS this is the exact
opposite of what used to happen to my '95 Trophy 1200-its tank became
pressurised, causing fuel to dribble down the left side of the engine, when
it was parked in the sun.
