Y2K meets original

Fellow lister Bert Bota and I arranged a ride today and, for the first
time, we had the chance to do a bit of comparison between his Y2K Blue
model and my January build 99 model. I must admit the ST is stunning in
blue and even though we were in the middle of nowhere, the bikes still
managed to draw attention.

A few things that seem to have changed:
- - The 2000 fuse box uses mini fuses vs. the 1999 model's 'normal' size
fuses
- - The fuses/relays that were behind the right side seat cowling have
been moved or eliminated.
- - The infamous wire tie at the ignition switch is no longer there and
the wires have been rerouted
- - It might be my imagination, but the ignition switch looks different
also.
- - The 2000 windshield has some shading on the edges (decorative or an
attempt to shade the clocks?)
- - With the change in computers, the 2000 model seems to have lost some
of its under seat storage
- - The new clutch lever works easier and seems a bit closer to the grip.
Bert does have the larger diameter heated grips and I don't, but the
clutch does seem somewhat easier to pull.

We switched bikes for a few miles to see if there were any differences.
In my opinion, the larger diameter of the heated grips would make long
distance riding more comfortable. The 2000 model does seem to shift
much cleaner than mine. The new clutch lever has much to do with this,
though Bert is running synthetic oil, and I'm running dead dinosaurs. I
will be changing to synthetic this week. I'm having the same problem
some other listers have mentioned with the brakes (brake pistons
seizing) and the 2000 seems perfect (was there a change in the brakes?
My brakes were already going soft by 1500 miles). Bert has the
competition can installed and all I can say is it sure sounds sweet and
doesn't intrude unless you really want it to.

We didn't really have much time for an all out comparison. I was
limited by a major flat spot in my rear tire and time constraints.
Frankly what I saw in the 2000 model was small changes to make a great
product better.
