radar detector /\ shift light

I always thought that it would be kind of neat and "for entertainment purpose only" to build a radar detector out of sold separately components (It is kind of difficult stomaching the idea of taking a perfectly good detector and disassembling it). It would be pretty cool to have the thing installed and hidden...no mess, no fuss, and hopefully no fuzz!! My only problem is that I would not know what to buy exactly, or how to piece it together. I seriously doubt that someone offers a kit.... perhaps instructions or plans??? I mean, we can get plans to build nukes "for educational or entertainment value", or buy "brass knuckle paperweights" off of the internet right?

idea: kind of off the subject, but has anyone fooled around with running a shift light? possibly by means of illuminating one of the idiot lights on the dash rather than mounting a separate light. Since these engines pull hard right to the limiter, shifting by "feel" usually results in hitting the limiter, and my eyes are usually on the road (where they should be). It would be neat to have a two stage setup, green light (as a warning) at 8K-ish up to 9.5K or so where the shift is needed.
