Fuel gauge fix??

On my 3rd refill of the new (as in very new) bike, now one week
old, I noticed that the fuel gauge hand went to Full.
Great. I then rode and rode till I'd done 173 km, when the
yellow warning light came on. So far so good. Rode to the
nearest petrol station, one mile away, to fill up, thereby
allowing me to see how many litres were left. Tanked 18 l, which
leaves 3 in the tank, right?
However, on filling up, the indicator stayed at Empty, which is
where it is now.
Oh well, it was nice while it lasted ....
