Generally it is about 3:1 ratio. So if you drop one on the front
it would be matched by dropping three in the rear.

So if dropping 1 in the front is a bit too much, try adding 2 in
the rear. Net effect is you will get a bit more torque at the rear
wheel, and the rear wheel (with stock chain) will be link's length
forward. End result, easier wheelies. If you like the gearing
change, when you put a new chain on the bike, add an extra link so
you will be back at the stock wheel base.

Anyway, my assumption was, that is ST went from 18 to 17 in the
front, it also probably went front 4[7|8] in the rear to 45. If so
the bike would feel no different, and Triumph would save 2 chain
links per bike, plus slightly cheaper sprockets. Anyway I think 17
tooth up front is a lot more common than 18, At least if memory
serves me correctly all of my 3 bikes have had 17 up front (Yeah
I know all kawis), but seriously from my statistically, sport bike
biased, insignificant accounts, 17 tooth wins :-)
