RE: Speed Touring

This isn't an isn't an issue of suspension "quality". "Quality" addresses things like parts breaking, leaks, and the suspension not performing as it was designed to. I believe your suspension is performing within the parameters it was design to. (Admitedly, there are most likely several compromises baked into the final design.) What you are expressing, rather, is an issue of your personal opinion of how you think the suspension should feel and perform. That's OK. Being in your comfort zone allows you to go faster, feel more secure, and be safer.

To that end, there are many, many parts and modifications you can apply to change the bike to satisfy your specific preferences. Just look toward the racing community. They continually modify bike geometry and suspension. Here's where we get to my suggestion..... GMD Computrac. Its a high-accuracy measurement and chassis adjustment service. Many in racing sing high praises about handling improvements as a result to GMD Computrac chassis tuning. They are world-wide and benefit from a hugh information base. All the folks I know in the GMD business are neck-deep in the sport, committed to excellance, and will work with you on a continuing basis to get just the feel you want from your bike.

One of my biggest observations is the greatly reduced amount of fork dive on the Speed Triple, which makes a pretty big difference when braking, just before flicking the bike into a turn. I could stiffen preload on my ST front, which may combat the problem some, but I'll have to add some rear preload to offset the resulting change in steering geometry. How about going with thicker fork oil, since dampening is not adjustable, or like Jonathon mentioned revalving? Has anyone out there messed with their ST suspension and have had favorable results?

The differences are multiple, but come down to higher spec suspension, different geometry and a stiffer frame; I sold my 509 to a friend here and rode it a few weeks ago - it was a real shock to get back on it; made the ST feel very smooth but lardy and completely without feedback from either front or rear.... could explain the spate of accidents recently? It felt like you could push the 509 10-20% more through turns where the ST just became too vague to trust; I love the ST still, but the suspension could do with an upgrade. Has anyone had it revalved?

I think it has the same crank and pistons as the ST, but different cams and mapping, right? I rode a buddy's Speed Triple over the weekend and it made my ST feel like Gold Wing. I know weight, suspension, and frame geometry has a bit to do with this also, but I was impressed! A real Hooligan bike I must say, but not near as comfortable as my ST.
