strange 'clunkng' sound

Anyone out there have experiences of strange noises coming from the front fairing/suspension area?  It is a noticeable metallic clunking sound, that mostly happens over deeper holes in the pavement.  It has got alot worse since the temperatures here plummented to +2C and the suspension has 'frozen' up ie. doesn't work until it gets warmed up with some km's.  I cannot find anything loose or missing; the handling at 'town' speeds does feel worse but I put that down to colder tyres taking longer to warm up and the fork fluid not working well in the cold. Any ideas?
