I don't think people really understand the concept of the action. It is not
to make oil companies sell less "gas".

Can you imagine if no one bought gas for one day! There'd be a media
meltdown, the power of the people (i.e their ability to organise and
co-operate) have to be taken seriously at last.

But no I agree it would fail... but only because of peoples willingness to
be controlled, their apathy and perceived impotence. And the oil companies
and other corporate cartels know this.
