Garry, The fuel gauge is directly connected to the ECM.
If you disconnect it a fault condition may be reported.

It is also used as an indicator when a new tune is loaded.

As such I would not recomend that it be disconected.

..I might just decide to use the trip meter and fuel warning 
..light to figure out when to get gas.  I think I will put 
..something else in the fuel gauge hole.
