I've heard that too, and I've also heard that it doesn't apply to all FI 
setups, eg the Taurus we used to have. The Ford people told us it wouldn't 
hurt if it ran out of fuel. Recently, when my '99 Sprint ST ran out, 
(completely out-I limped along until the motor stopped) I dumped 1 gal into 
the tank, and it started quite promptly, after I had waited for the usual 
fuel pump noise to stop (which didn't go on any longer than if I had stopped  
with a partially full tank). The bike since then has started and run normally.
