Saturday Ride

Well, again apologies to those that are "out of season" so to speak. As
Mark earlier put out to the list Saturday was a beautiful day to be riding.
I met Mark Hanke and Ken Pickett in Titusville around 10:30 and we headed
out from there. I ran them out on some of my favorite local roads - not
extremely technical, but with a few nice twisties so that you can actually
use the side of the tires. Traffic wasn't too bad and we were able to pass
the slow pokes that were out a day early for their Sunday morning drives......
We headed up through the center of Deland and found ourselves in the middle
of a parade.... they obviously heard that we were coming and wanted to get
a good seat to see the ST's... ;-) It was about noon as we pulled into the
airport for lunch - Kenny was already there waiting for us. So, we consumed
some of their award winning burgers (how many orders of fries do you with
that ?) and pulled out the map. We picked a route that would take us
through the SE corner of the Ocala National Forest and still get us home at
a reasonable time. We found a confused old man at the bar to take our pic -
He started off with the camera backwards (got a nice pic of his eye!). His
second attempt was a nice shot of the concrete and number three was what I
posted to the list.....
We headed off with Kenny in the lead - he sets a good pace. Once we hit 415
it was just us and the trees so Kenny took full advantage. Wide open roads
with nice sweepers..... unfortunately that road ended way too quick. After
a run down 19 in traffic, we moved off on 42 back toward Deland - a nice
collection of turns - we got to run the first half at a fun pace - not
insanely fast, but definitely fast enough to get the heart beating - the
second half slowed down as we got behind some slower moving traffic.
At 44 Kenny peeled off toward home and Ken pulled up from behind to tell us
Mark was down to cords..... We stopped and had a look - a couple of nice
patches. Unfortunately the 100 miles home for him was going to be all
straight roads.... We decided to head off and just stop and check it from
time to time. We headed back through Deland and came across a motorcycle
accident - the ambulance had already left, but the bike and people involved
were still around. It looks like someone in the oncoming lane made a left
turn in front of him and caught him as he went by. The bike was trashed up
on the sidewalk..... Hopefully the rider escaped without serious injury...
Ken then split off toward Orlando and Mark and I headed back to 95. We took
the run south at a slower speed to preserve what was left of Mark's tire -
so.... this is what the speed limit feels like ..... We hit Port St John
and the tire still looked pretty good, so he headed off south and headed home.
I hit the door at just over 200 miles, so I would assume that Mark ended up
at around 270 or so.
Another great weekend on the ST .......
