What oil to use

Garry,

Automotive oil USED to be okay to use. The issue is a little more
complicated now (at least in the USA). Automotive oils with the API SJ
"Energy Conserving" rating should NOT be used in your motorcycle. They
contain an additive package with some ingredients that can be detrimental to
your clutch and starter. If you can find an automotive synthetic with an SG
or SH rating, you should be okay. The old Mobil 1 (pre SJ) and the Mobil 1
motorcycle oil are probably the same formulation. Given that you can safely
run a full synthetic for a longer interval (as long as you always change the
filter), the increased cost isn't too painful. If you shop the internet, you
may even be able to find a decent deal. I bought a case of Red Line for
about $6.50 USD per quart.
