ST 12000 mile service & RS test ride

My ST had it's 12000 mile service yesterday. Nothing unusual turned up.

I had the spark plugs changed as I could not see the point of pushing them
to 24000 for the sake of about £5. Do other people do this?
All the valve clearances were spot on and needed no adjustment.
I was due to have the new fuel sender fitted but the mechanic forgot :-(,
I'll leave it to the next service.

I also had two new BT57 tyres, chain and sprockets, the winter salt killed
the chain. They aslo carried out some warranty work on the centre stand and
ignition switch wires and the little bracket that holds the side stand cut
out switch was replaced. It had cracked at the rear.

While my ST was being worked on I was loaned an RS (1024 miles on clock) for
the day and clocked up 110 miles.

The suspension felt firmer than the ST but not overly.

The mirors are not good, a good view of elbows and shoulders and not much
else.
The left hand mirror was not opticaly flat and was like looking at one of
those convex mirrors at the fair.

The petrol pump made a load screeching a couple of times when bring the fuel
system up to pressure.

I never realised how good the ST fairing is until I rode the RS. At three
figure speeds you have to realy hang on. Considering it's size though it
does a good job.

The BT020 tyres felt OK but they had not been properly scrubbed in to the
edges due to wet and salty roads, so I took is a little easy.

The above sounds a little negative but on the whole I liked the RS, it's
just that for my type of usage I need the full fairing and a good set of
(traffic police spotting) mirrors.

It was a nice way to spend the day, lots of fun for a tank full of petrol.

Regards, Ian
