"Flip up" Helmets

Hello fellow Trumpeteers:
For what it's worth, I always ride with a BMW System 3, or Shoei Duotech "flip
up" style full face helmet. I wear glasses and find it much easier and convenient to have
this type of helmet. I was in a high speed accident almost two years ago, traveling at 70
mph on a major highway when another vehicle lost its exhaust pipe and muffler. The
muffler hit my front wheel and knocked me down. I'm told I slid about 1/4 mile (I was
unconscious) by the driver of the 18 wheeler (articulated lorry for my British friends)
that was following me. I woke up just as I was coming to a stop. Needless to say, I
lived! I walked off the highway with three broken ribs (in five places) and a broken
wrist (not serious), and four small scabs. My helmet and riding gear saved me.
The Shoei Duotech helmet stayed perfectly locked in place. I would not let the
Emergency Medical Techs take it off until they understood how to remove it correctly. I
wouldn't worry about any helmet that is well made of fibreglas or kevlar and has been
well maintained with some governmental approval (DOT) or private testing (Snell)
certificate.
The key is to buy quality, and to be lucky.
