Hmmmm, that's "news" to me, too. I've been charging sealed car batteries
for years and never had a problem. In fact, every sealed battery I've
ever seen has had gas vents to let excess hydrogen gas out. That's why,
at least in litigation-prone America, the batteries have warning labels
saying not to smoke near them since a cigarette can ignite the gas
coming out of them. Also, it makes me wonder what miracle makes the
normal charging done by a vehicle's alternator/generator different from
the charging done by an external battery charger.

Color me dubious. Maybe the store you went to had too many battery
minders in stock?
