I had some of the same problems and concerns that you do before I installed
the risers on mine last month. I put them on mainly to help my back. I
haven't noticed any difference in handling. If anything they help a bit on
the downhill sections because you don't end up having to support so much
weight on the bars. On a ride with some other ST'ers a few weeks ago I
switched bikes with another rider to check out his double bubble and
performance pipe. He didn't have the risers on his and it was very easy
making the switch back and forth. They don't change the position that
dramatically, and had I not screwed up my back I don't think I would have
bothered. (Just got the MRI results back Friday, major herniated disk, so
I'm still taking it careful, as much as I can.)
