Cam-chain tensioner

Met someone (a fellow-lister) from Texas at Laguna Seca who had had his
tensioner go, causing self-destruction of his motor. He said the tensioner
looked defective-spline-like positioning teeth worn off. I am planning some
long trips-(i.e. Daytona and such-like) and even if my tensioner is OK, I am
not looking forward to worrying about it for 6,000 miles.
Would it be a good idea to have it replaced? Does anyone know if they are
putting out improved tendsioners from the factory now? Dave Collins (Worried
in San Diego)
