Broken down ST

Evening all,

Bad news on the reliability front :-(

I stopped off on the way home this evening to pick up some beer,
and when I went back to the bike it wouldn't start. It didn't even
attempt to turn over and there wasn't even that "flat battery" whirr
from the starter solenoid.

I checked the fuses and tried a jump start, still nothing. When I
turn the ignition on there is no sound of the fuel pump pressurising
the system. The idiot lights come on, and there is the sound of a
relay when I press the starter button, but no more. I think that the
relay sounds like it's in the switchgear on the right hand handlebar,
but the second breakdown recovery man thought it was under the tank.

The first breakdown recovery man thought that it could be related
to the immobiliser (a Meta 351a). I have to agree that the signs
point to that, but the alarm and immobiliser respond to the remote,
and when the immobiliser is on the bike is completely dead, no idiot
lights, nothing.

Tomorrow evening I'll pull the bodywork and see if there are any
obviously loose connections; if not I'll borrow a van and pay a visit
to Lilleys.

If anyone's got any ideas I'd love to hear 'em!

                Jim
