Mirrors

Hi Everybody:

We have had a bunch of mirror discussions on both lists, with
the general consensus being that many of the Triumph models
leave something to be desired in the mirrors department. My
first reaction was that I couldn't see anything behind me,
but then found out something kind of counter-intuitive that I
thought I would pass along for anyone who hasn't tried it yet.

Now, I am a big fellow, 6'3", 275# (lot of stones for you Brits),
and very wide across the shoulders. I wear a Vansen half-perf,
which bulges a bit at the elbows my in normal riding position.
This all probably makes the mirror problem as bad for me as
for anybody, but I found a solution in the adjustment alone.

When I adjust the ST mirrors so that I can just see my upper
arm/elbow at the inner mirror edge, the entire rest of the
mirror gives me the next lane, the shoulder, and the buildings
along the road. I can see nothing of the lane behind me at all
without moving my head side to side. *But*, when I adjust the
mirror inward so that my upper arm and elbow takes up exactly
one-half of the mirror, this swings the aim of the outer half
of the mirror back in so that I can see the whole lane behind
me in both mirrors at the same time, as well as the next lane
over on each side. Seems backwards, but swinging the mirrors
in, and seeing more of your elbows, also gives you more of the
road behind.

What to do with the inner half of the mirror then? Kind of
useless just to look at your arm. A convex stick-on, just less
than half the width of the mirror, is perfect, and gives that
extra bit of warning of traffic in the next lane that is in
what would otherwise be your blind spot.
