Re 17 tooth front cog

<<Do you know if you can get a set of sprokets, 1 tooth away from stock on
both sprokets instead of having to loose 2 teeth from the drive sproket
only, or will this not work for some reason...?>>

There is a difference between going 1-tooth down on the front and 1-tooth
up on the rear versus going two down on the front. I don't have the stock
gearing handy, but let's say it's 19 front, 45 rear.

Start 45/19 = 2.37
2-down front 45/17 = 2.65
1-down front, 1-up rear 46/18 = 2.56
1-down front, 1-down rear 44/18 = 2.44
2-up rear 47/19 = 2.47

As you can see, it's the ratio that counts, not the number of teeth. In a
theoretical world, a 10-tooth front and 30-tooth rear is exactly the same
as a 15-tooth front and 45-tooth rear... 30/10 = 45/15 = 3. I reality your
chain would wear out very quickly with a 10-tooth front.

Hope that helps clear up why 1-tooth away on each sprocket is not the same
as 2-teeth down on the front.
