The stock tune runs the engine pretty lean, especially at the lower
RPMs. While this is great for emissions, it's not optimal for power
delivery. With the "race" tune the engine runs richer, contributing at
least in part to your lower mileage.

The other major contributor (in my case) is that I love to hear my dawg
bark, so I'm a little more aggressive with the throttle than before,
too.

(This nearly got me in big trouble yesterday. I was riding with a bunch
of buddies in rural Maryland (USA) and we came upon a long stretch of
road with nothing be farmland on either side. The stretch had to be at
least two thirds of a mile long, so I let 'er rip and enjoyed the quick
spin up to an indicated 125 MPH. That's the fastest I've ever been on
the Sprint, and aside from the additional wind there wasn't much
difference -- just a rock-solid ride.

(Well, just after looking at the speedo, what comes around the corner at
the (rapidly approaching) end of the road, but a nice ol' police car. As
half the seat disappeard up my butt I figured I was a goner; hello,
Butch, nice jail cell you have here! Sure enough, as soon as I passed
the officer he nailed the brakes and pulled half-off the road like he
was going to make a U-turn.

(Fortunately I retained enough presence of mind to remember to steer
around the corner at the end of the road. This put the officer out of
sight, but I figured it would be a short reprieve. I kept coasting down
to the speed limit (55 MPH) while trying to figure out what to say when
I got pulled over. "Oh, that's the tach, not the speedo?" "Geez,
officer, I just got this bike before winter and I really haven't been
able to ride it until today, and geez, it seemed like such an empty
stretch of road..." "I'm sorry officer, I'm under the influence of an
evil man named Bloor..." "It's easier to hog-tie me if you let me get
out of my Aerostitch first..."

(A few more crazy lines came to mind, but as I kept looking back in the
mirrors the slow revelation dawned upon me: there was no officer in
sight. Faint hope stirred in my breast as the seconds ticked past. At
this point the riders ahead of me pulled off the road into a convenience
store parking lot, so I pulled up next to them and weakly got off my ST.
Could it be true? Could I actually get away with doing double the
double-nickel right in front of an officer? As the rest of the group
straggled in, they approached me with their eyes wide in disbelief. "Do
you know what you did?" they all asked.

(Only later that evening, tucked away at home with a cold beer in my
hand, could I answer my friends.

(I rolled the dice.

(They came up lucky.)
