Temp Questions

Hello All,
I have a temperature question.
Riding in this morning (45' F, damp) my temp gauge read between 176'
F and 186' F. Previously it would not drop below 186' F (Sunny, 50's, Dry).
Before this morning I had assumed the thermostat opened at 186' F. If this
is true, am I doing any harm by riding when the motor cannot stay at
operating temperature? I thought about placing card board in front of the
radiator or taping off sections of it. My previous bike was air/oil cooled
so I have never had a temp gauge to check on, and any variations in what it
reads have got me thinking.
