Sprint ST Purchase

I think there are a few members of this list who may find this story
regarding our household's purchase of a ST interesting. It was a year ago
that my wife mentioned she was interested in purchasing a motorcycle. She
had driven a Virago 400 when we lived in Victoria, B.C. 13 years ago and had
her bike shipped back to Edmonton, Alberta when I returned from a study
leave at the University of Victoria. The quality of the roads and the
drivers in the Edmonton area were disappointing to her and she sold her bike
shortly after settling back in Edmonton. Two years ago she attached a photo
of a Trophy to our refridgerator and said to me how much she like the look
of this bike. Last May she said she was in the market for a used bike and
went looking through ads in the newspaper for a used bike. I did not ride at
the time but supported her decision to purchase a used bike. I was a bit
surprised when she returned one night from looking around upon a 1996 Trophy
1200 as she wheeled into our driveway. The photo of the blue bike in our
kitchen was now sitting in our garage. It did not take to long to be
convinced to get my own license and after an Edmonton Safety Council "Gear
Up" course I received my license and have been riding since July '99. The
jump from a Honda 125 Training bike to the Trophy was significant but I have
enjoyed riding our Trophy and getting more experienced. A trip "two up"
through the Canadian Rockies was terrific and the wait for the snow to melt
over this winter was harder than had been the case in the past.

We realized it was probably time to consider another bike which, after some
research and advice, was determined to be a Sprint ST. The ST mailing list
and the unofficial website have been very helpful in assisting us in making
our decision. Last night we decided we would head over to Echo Cycle in
Edmonton and experience the bike first hand. The weather forecast did not
sound too bad last night but we were disappointed to rise out of bed to face
5 degree celcius temperatures, 30 km winds, and showers. Despite the lousy
weather we both managed to fit in test rides which certainly supported the
views of all the ST riders we had spoken to and read about in reviews. With
big smiles on our faces we purchased a black '00 Sprint ST and I picked up
some Triumph boots and a jacket to lighten our wallets a little bit more.
Special thanks to Rick, Paul, and Jerry at Echo Cycle for their expertise
and support in our purchase. In future, I am sure there will be some
negotiating between my wife and I on who gets the Sprint versus the Trophy.
One thing for sure we are both looking forward to putting on a few miles
this summer before the snow falls once again.
