  Hello I drive a 99 ST  & wore the pads down to metal in 3000 miles I also 
have ridden for over 30 yrs. Yes you can ride the brake & not know it.  THE 
FIX  lower your brake peddle down as far as you can so as you ride your foot 
is never touching it, untill you need it. After I did it I know have 3655 
more miles & limited pad wear, I still have 50% rear pad left. good luck
