Ummm . . .  if you add resistance in series with an existing load (the
heated grip element) you DECREASE the current in the circuit (which
decreases the heat given off), so the existing wiring will have no problem.
The trouble is that you'll have to add it to the right side, which is the
one that is apparently already comfortably warm.

The correct way to adjust would have been to use a heating element on the
left side that has LOWER resistance, which results in MORE current being
drawn (ie. warm it up a bit).  But if these modified grips are then mounted
on various bikes, you're still undoubtedly going to get some imbalance
caused by things like the heatsink action of the bars and insulation
factors.

In other words it would be possible to engineer heated grips for a
particular bike that are balanced and they would be no more expensive to
manufacture, but as a heated grip vendor you'd have to go thru this process
for each bike (not practical, especially when you consider that it would
only apply to stock handlebar options).  The balancing/adjusting capability
that Newtronic mentions would solve this, but this will increase the
manufacturing cost.
