other tricks:
    - kill and start your engine -- i've been told that the starter
motor can make a difference in the magnetic field.
    - put your sidestand down, near one of the wires. (you can often
see the groove in the pavement where the loop runs.)
    - pull far enough forward that the car behind you will trigger it.
    - if you're on a (steel-framed) bicycle, get off it and lay the
bike down on the loop, to get more metal near the sensor.
    - time how long you've been there, or the number of missed cycles,
before running the light -- that way you have a more plausible
story when you try and convince the nice officer that you believe
	the light to be defective.
    - call the appropriate roadway maintenance crew and tell them
about the problem, especially if it's one you hit repeatedly.
they're sometimes more than happy to readjust it. they're
	_supposed_ to pick up motorcycles.
