I go through Progressive for my SV650, and it's reasonable (very
reasonable, I'd have to check, but around $300 or $400).  My roommate
checked with them for his VFR and got quoted something ridiculous like you
did.  Shop around, some insurance companies seem to be unwilling to insure
some bikes, while others are.  I can ask what company he's using if you'd
like, I believe he ended up paying between $1k to $2k for the VFR and his
old Hawk.

hehe, for the money it costs to insure that CBR1100 I could buy a new
version of my bike every year!
