I had the same question back in 92 with a Yamaha FZR-1000.
The engine was completely disassembled 3 times before my problem was cured.
My warranty bill when the problem was finally figured out was a little over
7000.00! Over course that included a rental car for 5 weeks and lots of
Yamaha "we want you to be a happy customer goodies" Hell I didn't pay that
much for the bike brand new.
When I asked the rep why he just didn't replace the engine he said that
Yamaha needed this bike on the road. In fact they gave me an additional 3
year warranty.
