Engine Damaged by low speed plop-over?

Well, I went and wadded-up my 2000 ST last week. I lost traction going into
a turn in West Virginia (at the town of Gauley Bridge, halfway between
Charleston and Beckley, WV.). I went over on the left side, going approx.
20-25 mph, slid with the bike for awhile, and ended up in gravel at the far
end of the turn. For about 20 seconds after the crash, the engine kept
running, until I flicked off the kill switch.

Other than some swelling and bruising in places that no guy should be black
and blue, I'm OK. My problem is the ST.

At first, I thought I could keep on riding. Then I noticed that the
gearshift lever was broken. After some makeshift repairs to the lever with
the help of a local auto shop, I returned to the bike, only to find that it
would not start. (Wouldn't crank over, and the positive battery terminal
became very hot when trying to turn it over). Also, a fair amount of oil
was dripping from the bottom of the fairing.

I then had the bike towed in to Beckley Honda/Triumph in Beckley. WV. The
head of service (Dale) emptied about a quart of oil out of the air box,
changed the oil, and then started the bike. After burning off some excess
oil within the cylinders (blue smoke), the bike continued to smoke (white
smoke) under acceleration.

The bike starts right up, and idles fine. However, whenever the throttle is
blipped, or held under acceleration, a significant quantity of white smoke
is emitted. The mechanic believes this must be either a cracked head or, at
best, a head gasket problem, causing coolant to mix into the combustion
chambers. There is no noticeable loss of coolant when running the engine.

I find it hard to believe that such significant damage could have occurred
from a seemingly minor crash. Does anyone on the list have any
ideas/suggestions of what (hopefully minor and inexpensive) thing is causing
the continued smoking?

Thanks in advance,

Jordan
