I'm not sure if I understand what your asking, but let me clarify what I
was saying.

If the manufacturer lists 42 as the max, I would try the range between 32
and 42 to see what I like. I'm not saying that running at 31 would be
unsafe (I'll leave that to the tire companies lawyers) but I think at that
point the tire is going to be squirming too much (at least for my taste).

I find that I'm usually happy with 2-4 pounds less than the max. YMMV.
