[ST] 18 yrs experience distilled.....

This is a cross posting from another list, valuable insights may be
gleaned therein,

How I answered the following:

                - What types of crashes have you experienced?
                - What were the causes?
                - What would you do differently to avoid a similar
situation?
                - What are your personal rules / habits for avoiding
risky situations?
                - Any other information you can share with us...

The only cage induced accident was a guy making a LEFT turn into a bar
and didn't
notice me passing in front of him. Woke up on the hood of his car, his
first words were "I didn't see ya....and I ride too.". Man, talk about
wanting to hurt some one. I repaired the bike inside of 20 days and the
soft tissue damage took a little longer. I was hit in a perfect "T"
bone the seat of my bike was under his front bumper by 5 or 6 inches.
Slight angle of impact allowed my foot to escape, but not my boot!. I
was not speeding, he was thirsty for a beer. Go figure.

                Lessons learned:
keep a disposable camera in your kit
Loud pipes just piss off the neighbor's
Riding in daylight with your high beams didn't help
Quality leather kept his hood ornament out of my
spleen
If the boots were lace on, or strapped my foot would
have severed at the calf.
Optional helmet may or may not keep your skull
together.

Lets see safety tips, when the lady who just tried to run you over gets
caught at a red light, don't pull up next to her to 'explain' her
driving error. She might pull a gun. Of course you could go code red and
just yell at her anyways. But don't kick in her drivers door, that just
makes the homicide justifiable .

When riding in the rain at a reasonable distance you can see the
reflection of brake lights on the wet road, under the
SUK6000 be-a-moth suv you are following. Love those tinted windows.

When your future mother in law asks how you eat 'on the road' tell her
about the non-stick properties of PAM on exhaust pipes and the never
ending variety of fresh roadkill. Or just smile and ask her if she's
ever seen manta rays feed. Bugs are low cholesterol, who'da guessed.

Don't eat the yellow snow.

Don't piss into the wind, or spit for that matter. Actually don't do
either if you are riding and have a pillion passenger.

Don't try to get eggs over easy in New Jersey, they are truly looking
out for your well being, honest.

When you are 2 hours out from home, in the rain, in july, on the tail
end of a 10 hour multi-state tour-de force. You should thank the NJ ST
trooper for reminding you for $78. That splitting lanes at 80mph in the
rain is a bad idea. Oh yeah, if he's kind enough to ask the "Three
Questions", think before answering them. Ahh you ask what are the
"Three Questions"......
1 Are there any warrants out for your arrest?
2 Are you carrying any weapons?
3 Are you carrying any narcotics?

Three great ways to f'up your trip. I always seem to get asked the Three
Questions, I'm a nice guy too. Can you believe?

If you can't afford the best gear, or any gear, Do the best you can,
you will either get where you are going or not. You're friends will help
you out or you'll make new friends.

Get a motorcycle endorsement, keep it valid.

Jeff Cooper said there were three conditions....
White.......you got no clue what's going on -till it happens
Yellow......you are on. observing, expecting, anticipating
prepared-READY
Red........FIGHT FOR YOUR LIFE- yellow is a good place to be when riding

Well that's enough spew for now, ride long and live.

                Peace,
                Andrew
