What word do the Brits use to describe paved roads? The oddest sign I've seen concerning road surfaces was one in northern Minnesota that read: "Bituminous Ends 1/4 mile."

huh? over here we refer to the paved road (ie. the part you ride/drive on)
as the pavement. Sidewalks are for pedestrians.
