Are you sure it is not chain oil ? Make sure to clean the gunk out of the
sprocket area really well and then check it again.
The seal could be bad, but I would bet that it was deformed due to a chain
that was adjusted too tight. This was the cause of a 'leak' for me after
one dealer service and as soon as I backed off the chain a bit, I was fine.
